Mitragyna speciosa is the formal scientific name for the plant commonly known as kratom. It is a tropical evergreen tree belonging to the Rubiaceae family, the same botanical family as coffee. Native to Southeast Asia, it grows naturally in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Papua New Guinea, thriving in humid, tropical climates with rich soil.

The leaves are the part of the plant that matters commercially. They are large, glossy, and dark green, with prominent central veins that can appear red, green, or white depending on maturity and the specific tree. These vein colors form the basis of the commercial classification system used throughout the kratom industry. Mature trees can reach heights of 25 meters (approximately 80 feet) with trunk diameters of nearly a meter.

The leaves of Mitragyna speciosa contain over 40 identified alkaloids, with mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine being the most pharmacologically significant. Mitragynine typically accounts for roughly 60-66% of total alkaloid content, while 7-hydroxymitragynine is present in much smaller quantities but is considerably more potent at opioid receptors.

The species was first formally described by Dutch colonial botanist Pieter Korthals in the 19th century. The genus name “Mitragyna” was chosen because the plant’s stigmas resembled a bishop’s mitre (hat). Traditional use of kratom leaves in Thailand and Malaysia dates back centuries, primarily among agricultural laborers who chewed fresh leaves for energy, endurance, and relief from physical strain.
