What is Kratom?

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tropical evergreen tree in the Rubiaceae family, the same botanical family as coffee. Native to Southeast Asia, it grows naturally in the tropical forests of Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Papua New Guinea. Mature trees can reach 80 feet or more in their native habitat and produce large, glossy leaves containing a complex array of naturally occurring alkaloids.

The leaves have been used by indigenous communities in Southeast Asia for centuries. Traditional use involves chewing fresh leaves or brewing them into tea, often by laborers and farmers as part of their daily routine. This long, well-documented history of human use is a foundational element of kratom’s scientific and cultural profile, and one of the reasons outright prohibition faces significant opposition from researchers, advocates, and consumers.

Kratom’s effects are primarily attributed to two alkaloids: mitragynine (the most abundant, typically 60-70% of total alkaloid content) and 7-hydroxymitragynine (present in smaller quantities but significantly more potent). These compounds interact with opioid receptors and other neurological systems, producing effects that users report vary based on the amount consumed, the specific product’s alkaloid profile, and individual physiology. Unlike classical opioids, kratom’s alkaloids are partial agonists, a distinction that researchers consider pharmacologically significant.

In the Western market, kratom is available as dried leaf powder (the most common form), capsules, crushed leaf for tea, liquid extracts, and concentrated extract products. Products are categorized by “strain” names (Maeng Da, Bali, Borneo) and by vein color (red, green, white), though these classifications are not scientifically standardized. Kratom is legal at the US federal level but regulated or restricted in several states, and its legal status continues to evolve globally.

How It’s Used

Consumers purchase kratom primarily through online vendors and specialty retail shops. The market offers a wide range of product types, potencies, and price points. Informed consumers look for vendors who are AKA GMP-certified, provide batch-specific certificates of analysis, and comply with KCPA standards where applicable, these are the most reliable indicators of product quality and vendor accountability.

Understanding kratom means recognizing its complexity. It is a plant with centuries of traditional use, a growing body of modern research, a passionate consumer advocacy community, and an evolving legal landscape that varies by jurisdiction. There is no single, simple narrative, and anyone offering one is probably leaving out important context.
