What is Toss and Wash?

Toss and wash is exactly what it sounds like. You place a measured dose of kratom powder directly into your mouth, typically on or under the tongue, and immediately wash it down with a large swallow of water, juice, or another beverage. No preparation, no equipment, no wait time.

The method is widely used among experienced kratom consumers for one simple reason: speed. The powder contacts mucous membranes in the mouth and reaches the stomach quickly, leading to a faster onset of effects compared to capsules or tea. Many consumers prefer it over other methods purely for convenience.

That said, toss and wash is not for everyone. Kratom powder has a notably bitter, earthy taste that many people find genuinely difficult. Placing dry powder directly in the mouth can also trigger gagging or coughing if the powder is accidentally inhaled. If you are trying this method for the first time, start with a small amount to get the technique down before working up to your full dose.

Common tips for a successful toss and wash: use a thick, flavorful liquid (orange juice and chocolate milk are popular choices) to mask the taste, place the powder toward the back of the tongue, have the liquid ready before placing the powder, and do not breathe in through your mouth while the powder is present. Some consumers modify the technique by mixing the powder into a small amount of liquid first, creating a slurry that is easier to swallow, sometimes called a “wash” or simply mixing.

How It’s Used

Toss and wash is one of several consumption methods discussed in kratom communities, alongside tea preparation, capsules, and mixing into food or smoothies. Each method involves trade-offs in terms of convenience, taste, onset speed, and ease of use.

For consumers who value speed and simplicity above all else, toss and wash remains the go-to. For those who cannot tolerate the taste, capsules or plain leaf tea offer more palatable alternatives, with a slightly slower onset as the trade-off.
